Inspection, Repair and Upgrade Process

1: Inspection of Console Condition As-Received - Front

This one had seen plenty of use, with a few scratches and marks on the front shell plus a damaged D-pad surround.

2: Inspection of Console Condition As-Received - Rear

More scratches and marks on the rear, plus a missing battery compartment cover - definitely a candidate for a brand new shell.

3: Open Up

Removal of screws to reveal a typical scene - electrolytic capacitors WELL past their best (console would not power on). This also showed a twin-ASIC model.

4: Capacitors - Close Up 1

Evidence of leaked electrolyte on pins (lower left).

5: Capacitors - Close Up 2

Leakage even more evident on these caps.

6: Old Capacitors Removed - Left Side

Lots of gunk left behind.

7: Old Capacitors Removed - Right Side

Relatively clean this side (C6 and C48 seem much less prone to leaking).

8: Clean Up - Left Side

Why SEGA Game Gears Die: The Leaking Capacitor Epidemic

Published: July 2026 • 5 Min Read

If you've dug an old SEGA Game Gear out of your loft recently, chances are you were greeted with (at best) a dim screen, washed-out contrast, or completely dead audio. Maybe even worse than that, with no signs of life whatsoever. You aren't alone — this affects almost 100% of unserviced original Game Gears today.

The Surface-Mount Chemical Culprit

During production in the early 1990s, SEGA utilized surface-mount electrolytic capacitors with a specific liquid electrolyte formula. Over the last 30+ years, the rubber seals on these miniature 'can' style capacitrs have degraded, causing acidic electrolyte to leak directly onto the PCB and surrounding components.

This leaked chemical eats away at PCB traces, chip legs, solder, etc, causing everything from dull sound output, dim screen, missing lines, or even the dreaded red light on-off cycle.

Why Ceramic Capacitors Are Excellent Replacements

At Midnight Pumpkin, we replace all but one of the original electrolytic capacitors on the main board with high-grade, worry-free Multi-Layer Ceramic capacitors during the recapping process. Unlike original electrolytic cans, ceramic caps contain no liquid, will never leak, and effectively future-proof your Game Gear for decades to come. We then follow this up by using the highest quality brand new electrolytic capacitors on the remaining position on the main board (5V rail buffer), and on the sound and power boards.ese critical

The Atari Lynx Time-Bomb: Why Its Power Circuit Fails Unsafe

Published: June 2026 • 4 Min Read
While the SEGA Game Gear is notorious for leaking capacitors, both the Atari Lynx I and Lynx II suffer from a far more lethal hardware flaw: a power regulation design that fails unsafe. Plugging in an unserviced Lynx or using the wrong power supply can instantly kill the console permanently.

How The Original Regulation Circuit Works

To reduce manufacturing costs in 1989, Atari bypassed using traditional, heat-heavy 7805 voltage regulators. Instead, they designed a discrete circuit using a Zener diode (ZD1), a current-limiting resistor, a MOSFET (Q11), and supporting PNP transistors.

This circuit takes input power — either ~9V DC from six AA batteries or up to 9–12V from a mains adapter — and drops it down to the safe 5V DC required by the system's delicate custom integrated circuits.

Fail-Safe vs. Fail-Unsafe Engineering

In proper electronic design, a regulator circuit should be fail-safe—meaning if a component ages, breaks, or shorts out, the system safely cuts off power or drops the voltage to zero.

In the case of the Atari Lynx's power circuit however, failure can and often does in fail-unsafe. If the Zener diode degrades, if resistor R56 drifts out of spec, or if the power MOSFET shorts internally:

  • The safety regulation collapses completely.
  • Unregulated 9V+ raw input voltage is dumped straight onto the 5V power rail.
  • The custom custom 'Mikey' and 'Suzy' ASICs receive double their rated voltage.

The Tragic Result: Instant CPU Death

Because the Lynx's custom silicon (Mikey and Suzy) handles graphics, sound, and system control, frying them turns the motherboard into a permanent paperweight. Replacement custom chips are no longer produced and can only be sourced by harvesting another working console.

The Midnight Pumpkin Fix

To prevent catastrophic failure, every Atari Lynx serviced at Midnight Pumpkin undergoes a mandatory power circuit overhaul:

  • Rebuilding the 9V Circuit: Installing fresh, modern ultra-reliable Zener diodes, high-spec MOSFETs, and switching transistors.
  • Modern 5V USB-C Conversion: Completely replacing or bypassing the high-risk legacy 9V circuit with a modern 5V USB-C power board. Because USB supplies a fixed, pre-regulated 5V, the custom chips are permanently safe from over-voltage destruction!

The Key SEGA Game Gear Question - What Cap?

Published: June 2026 • 4 Min Read
What capacitors do we use and why?

The Midnight Pumpkin Approach

Here at Midnight Pumpkin we have developed a recap strategy that we feel gives best performance and long term reliability of your Game Gear.

To avoid future failure and leakage we use high-quality MLC (Multi-Layer-Ceramic) capacitors, verified for correct capacitance upon receipt from our suppliers, on the main board in all cases except the 5V rail buffer capacitor - this is a high quality electrolytic version of higher capacitance to provide additional support to this critical power supply path for the main board.

On the sound board we have extensively tested various types of capacitors as replacements for the originals and found that capacitance-matched audio-grade electrolytic Elna components provide the best sound quality, especially at higher volumes, and reliability than all others we assessed. These cost a little more than the MLC’s that many now use but we absorb that in order to provide a better quality end-product.

On the power board we stick with electrolytic capacitors, replacing the old with new high quality versions, as these are best for power supply support and filtering.

We never rest at Midnight Pumpkin

We continually keep an eye out for and test even better solutions so be assured that whenever you buy a refurbished console from us it will be re-capped to the highest standard we can achieve at that time.

Just How Broken Is My Game Gear?

Published: August 2026 • 5 Min Read

A common discussion we find ourselves in with customers here at Midnight Pumpkin HQ is - “only the sound on my Game Gear has stopped working, it works perfectly otherwise” or “the red light doesn’t come on, that’s the only problem, so will a new power board fix my Game Gear?”.

Sadly these are tip-of-the-iceberg issues, and whilst we understand the hope that ‘my console can be fixed easier/cheaper/is worth more than a totally dead one’ the reality is that ALL Game Gears now need a full re-cap at this stage of their lives. Elements that may work now are on borrowed time so restoring and preserving full function for the long term can only be achieved by a comprehensive reworking.

Therefore, the cost of initial repair (i.e. a recap) is the same regardless of whether it’s totally dead, powers on but the sound doesn’t work, works but with a dim screen, etc. Yes this costs more initially, but it’s better as a lump sum in one hit than multiple smaller costs over time as each element inevitably fails.

For this reason we only offer full re-caps on Game Gears here at Midnight Pumpkin HQ; contact us using the form at the bottom of our homepage to book yours in.
